Your First 90 Days as a Franchisee: What to Expect

Taking the first step into business ownership is exciting, but it’s completely natural to have questions about what happens next.

For many people exploring franchise ownership, one of the biggest uncertainties isn’t whether they can do the job, it’s understanding how the transition from employee to business owner actually works.

What happens after you join? How does the training work? When do you start seeing customers? And perhaps most importantly, will you be expected to figure everything out on your own?

At Just Shutters, the first 90 days are carefully structured to help you develop practical skills, gain experience and establish strong foundations for the future. Rather than being thrown in at the deep end, you’ll follow a clear path designed to help you learn, grow and settle into your new role as a business owner.

The First Steps After Joining

Once you become a Just Shutters franchisee, the focus immediately shifts towards preparing you for launch.

Starting a business from scratch can feel overwhelming because every decision, process and system needs to be created. One of the advantages of joining a franchise is that much of this groundwork has already been done for you.

Just Shutters Team

If you’re still exploring whether franchise ownership is right for you, the British Franchise Association offers independent guidance and advice for prospective franchisees.

During your onboarding period, you’ll be introduced to the systems, processes and people that will support your business. You’ll spend time getting to know the Business Support team, understanding how the network operates and familiarising yourself with the tools you’ll use day to day.

Most importantly, you’ll begin your training programme.

Franchise Training Designed to build Confidence

One of the most common concerns among prospective franchisees is whether they need previous industry experience. The simple answer is no.

Many successful Just Shutters franchisees have come from completely different backgrounds, including retail management, financial services, engineering, hospitality and corporate leadership.

Our training programme is designed to provide the knowledge and practical experience needed to operate your business with confidence.

Training covers areas including:

  • Product knowledge
  • Design principles
  • Measuring and surveying
  • Conducting home design visits
  • Sales processes
  • Installation techniques
  • Using our Pi CRM system
  • Day to day business operations
  • The Just Shutters ethos
  • Local marketing

The goal isn’t to turn you into an expert overnight. Instead, it’s about helping you build understanding step by step while developing the confidence to apply what you’ve learned in real-world situations.

By the end of training, you’ll have a solid understanding of how the business operates and what a typical customer journey looks like from enquiry through to installation.

Marketing Support from Day One

One of the biggest concerns when starting a business is where the first customers will come from.

At Just Shutters, we help remove much of that uncertainty. Before you even start your training, our marketing team will have already established the foundations of your local marketing activity, helping to build awareness within your territory and create early momentum ahead of your launch.

Alongside this, franchisees benefit from our ongoing national marketing programme. Through a combination of digital marketing, national PPC, SEO and website activity, email marketing and advertising, we continually promote Just Shutters and generate enquiries across the network.

As your business becomes established, local marketing remains an important part of long-term growth. While we continue to invest in national marketing activity, franchisees are responsible for developing their presence within their territory through networking, local partnerships, exhibitions and other local marketing initiatives.

This combination of national support and local activity helps create a strong platform for long-term success, allowing you to focus on learning the business, gaining experience and delivering an exceptional customer experience during your first 90 days.

Launching Your Business

Once training is complete, the next stage begins, putting your knowledge into practice.

This is the stage where everything comes together. The knowledge gained during training translates into real customer appointments, real shutter design projects and the day-to-day experience of running your own business

As you begin operating in your territory, you’ll continue to be supported by Nick Sumbler, our Head of Franchise Growth and Support. Nick works closely with franchisees throughout their journey, providing guidance, mentorship and regular meetings to help you build confidence, develop your business and make the most of the opportunities within your territory.

Just as importantly, you’re not expected to manage every aspect of the customer journey yourself. Our Business Support team handles many of the administrative tasks behind the scenes, from sending brochures and nurturing enquiries through to booking appointments and managing your diary.

This allows you to focus your time where it adds the most value, meeting customers, designing beautiful shutter solutions and growing into your new role as a business owner.

For most franchisees, those first customer appointments are where everything starts to click. The training begins to make sense in a real-world setting, experience grows with each home design consultation and the transition from trainee to business owner starts to feel very natural.

Building Your Business One Customer at a Time

The early stages of any business are about learning, refining and building experience.

During your first few months, your priorities are likely to focus on:

  • Learning systems and processes
  • Developing confidence with customers
  • Building product knowledge
  • Delivering excellent customer service
  • Establishing daily routines
  • Gaining practical experience

It’s important to remember that the first 90 days are not about rapid expansion or chasing ambitious growth targets.

Instead, they’re about establishing good habits and processes that will support your future success.

Every customer interaction, every design survey and every installation adds to your experience. Before long, the tasks that once felt unfamiliar become second nature.

This is also the stage where local marketing becomes increasingly important. While the foundations will already have been put in place ahead of your launch, building a strong local presence is something that develops over time through consistent activity within your territory.

Simple actions can make a significant difference. These might include leaflet drops around recent installations, building relationships with local businesses, attending exhibitions and community events, joining networking groups and keeping your online presence fresh and up to date.

Perhaps most importantly, this is your opportunity to establish yourself within your local community. The relationships you build during these early months, whether with customers, local businesses or community groups, can become valuable sources of referrals and recommendations for years to come.

When combined with our national marketing activity and the support of the wider network, these local efforts help build awareness, trust and a reputation that becomes one of your greatest business assets over time.

The Value of a Franchise Network

When you’re running a business on your own, every challenge can feel like a new problem to solve.

Within a franchise network, someone has usually encountered that situation before.

At Just Shutters, franchisees regularly share knowledge, ideas and practical advice. Having access to a network of experienced business owners means you’re able to learn from people who have already faced many of the same challenges and opportunities.

This collaborative culture is one of the things that makes franchise ownership so different from starting alone. You’re part of a network that genuinely wants to see each member succeed.

Why the First 90 Days Matter

The first 90 days are not about becoming the finished article.

They’re about creating the habits, knowledge and understanding that will support your long-term success.

Every established franchise owner started exactly where you are now, learning new skills, gaining experience and building confidence one step at a time.

With the right training, ongoing support and a proven business model behind you, those first steps become far less daunting.

For many franchisees, the first 90 days are when they realise they are not building a business alone. They’re becoming part of a network designed to help them succeed.

Starting a business will always feel like a big step, but having the right people around you can make all the difference. From your initial training and launch through to your first home design appointments and beyond, support is there every step of the way.

If you’ve ever wondered whether a franchise is a good idea, understanding what those first few months actually look like can often provide the reassurance needed to take the next step.
